Former FDU Standout will be the team's captain and player/coach for the 2010 season
West Windsor, N.J. (Saturday, November 14, 2009) - The New Jersey Wildcats announced today that FDU four-year letter winner and current FDU assistant coach Marguerite Ferrell will rejoin the Wildcats as the teams player/coach for the 2010 season. As a freshman at FDU, she was the only first-year player to start all 18 games, picking up Brine Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors along the way. In her senior season, she shifted up front after playing three seasons on the back line and the midfield, en route to another Brine NEC Player of the Week distinction. In her senior season, she paced the squad with a team-best eight goals (17 points), receiving First Team All-Conference acclaim.
Ferrell’s 45 points and 19 goals rank second all-time for FDU, while she remains in the top 10 of six offensive categories. A two-goal performance versus Quinnipiac in 2005 landed her in a tie for most goals in a game, also propelling her into a tie for most game-winning goals in a career with five.
At Rahway High School, Ferrell garnered All-State and All-County honors three times. She also earned Mountain Valley Conference First Team distinction as a senior.
She is currently the assistant coach for the Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights in her fourth year with the Northeast Conference program. Marguerite Ferrell was named assistant coach of the Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s soccer team in August 2006. The fourth-year assistant coach’s responsibilities include recruiting, training, and overall development of the program.
"What I like most about Marguerite is that she plays the game with a passion. My goal this year is to see the team play every minute of the season with passion and Marguerite will set that tone," Wildcats head coach Kevin McDermott commented. “She will be very important to our team on and off the field. She will serve as the team’s captain and player/coach. Her leadership abilities will take our team to another level, and we are pleased to have her with us again in 2010.”
"Marguerite brings with her lots of W-League experience and leadership qualities that she has showed over the years with the Wildcats and continues to show as the current fourth year assistant coach at FDU," Wildcats Vice President Jim Gooley remarked.
The New Jersey Wildcats played their debut season in the W-League in 1996 and has competed every season since. Under the guidance of then-head coach Charlie Naimo, the Wildcats compiled a 41-1 regular season record from 2004-06, winning regular season titles in 2004 and 2006 while taking the W-League championship in 2005. Following the 2005 season, the Wildcats were named the USL Franchise of the Year, and Naimo won the FieldTurf W-League Coach of the Year award in 2006.
The USL W-League played its inaugural season in 1995, and it is recognized as the premiere development league for female players in North America. The schedule is set to open next May and commence in August.
